Many working days involve hours of sitting: at a desk, in meetings or in traffic. The World Health Organization recommends limiting sedentary time and being more physically active. A short movement break is one way to get started.
Choose movements that feel comfortable and fit your abilities and workspace. Move slowly, breathe normally and never stretch to the point of pain.
A quick note on safety. These stretches are general guidance, not medical advice. If you have an injury, a health condition or feel pain or dizziness, stop and speak to a health professional.
Movements to choose from
Neck release
Sit tall. Gently tilt your right ear towards your right shoulder and hold for 15 seconds, breathing slowly. Repeat on the left.
Shoulder rolls
Lift your shoulders towards your ears, roll them back and down. Do 10 slow rolls, then 10 forwards.
Chest opener
Clasp your hands behind your back (or hold the back of your chair), lift your chest and draw your shoulder blades together. Hold for 15 seconds.
Seated twist
Feet flat on the floor, turn your upper body to the right, holding the back of the chair. Hold for 15 seconds, then turn to the left.
Wrist and forearm stretch
Hold one arm out, palm up. Use the other hand to gently bend the fingers down towards the floor. Hold for 15 seconds, then switch arms.
Ankle circles
Lift one foot off the floor and circle the ankle 10 times each way. Switch feet.
Stand and walk
Finish by standing up and walking for a minute: refill your water, take the stairs, or deliver a message in person.
Make it a habit
- Link it to something you already do — after a call ends, or each time you refill your water.
- Set a gentle reminder on your phone or calendar for mid-morning and mid-afternoon.
- Do it together. A two-minute team stretch at the start of a meeting makes it normal for everyone.
